About Oi Ching Chan

Oi Ching Chan is a London-based conductor from Hong Kong, known for her compelling presence and calm authority on the podium. She is the Artistic Director of the recently founded New London Harmonia, where her performances have been praised for their clarity and sophistication. As a participant in the Royal Philharmonic Society’s Women Conductors Gateshead programme, she is closely affiliated with the Royal Northern Sinfonia at The Glasshouse International Centre for Music.

Oi Ching has collaborated with orchestras worldwide, leaving a distinctive mark on stages graced by the Welsh National Opera Orchestra, Ulster Orchestra, Orchestre Métropolitain, Sofia Philharmonic, and Kuopio Symphony Orchestra, among others. She has had the privilege of being mentored by esteemed conductors including Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Marin Alsop, Jac van Steen, and Colin Metters.

Her talent has also led to assistantships with conductors such as Ryan Bancroft and Jac van Steen (BBC National Orchestra of Wales), and Nil Venditti (Royal Northern Sinfonia), further honing her skills in high-profile professional settings. Invitations to renowned conducting programmes such as the Dartington Music Summer School and the Académie du Domaine Forget de Charlevoix have added further depth to her artistic development.

A passionate advocate for contemporary music, Oi Ching conducted the Hungarian premiere of Erlantz (2015) by French-Spanish Basque composer Ramon Lazkano with the Danubia Orchestra, as part of the Peter Eötvös Contemporary Music Foundation’s Conductors Programme. She has also led premieres with the Sofia Philharmonic during the Sofia Symphonic Summit.

Born and raised in Hong Kong, Oi Ching earned her Bachelor of Arts in Music from Hong Kong Baptist University. She then moved to Cardiff to study orchestral conducting at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, where she received a Master of Performance with Distinction under the guidance of David Jones. Further studies were undertaken with the world-renowned conductor Jorma Panula at the Panula Academy in Finland.
